🕹️ How to play

  1. Start the typing test: English text, 1 minute and Easy are selected by default. On a computer the typing box is already focused, so just start typing; on a phone, tap the box to open the keyboard. The countdown starts with your first keystroke — there is no start button.
  2. Type the line shown above the box: You see the current line plus the next two. Correct characters light up, typos turn red with an underline, and a full line slides away automatically. Missed a few characters? Press Enter to jump to the next line; skipped positions count as neither right nor wrong.
  3. Read your result and go again: When time runs out you get your WPM, accuracy, a rank, how far you are from your best, and a speed graph in 5-second steps. Press Esc or tap Play again for a fresh passage with the same settings.

📖 Rules & variants

Timing: the clock starts on your first keystroke and the test only ends when time is up (30 s, 1 min or 3 min). Esc or Restart during a test throws it away without saving. Switching tabs or locking your phone pauses the test and hides the text; a paused test still gets a score but never counts as a personal best.

WPM: words per minute = correct characters ÷ 5 ÷ minutes, the standard where five characters make one word. Spaces between words and the space at the end of each line are characters you need to type. Capital letters matter. Your result also shows CPM (correct characters per minute) and raw WPM, which counts every character you typed, typos included. Smart quotes from iPhone keyboards count the same as straight quotes.

Accuracy = (characters typed − typos) ÷ characters typed, rounded down. A typo you fix with Backspace still counts against accuracy, so any typo keeps you below 100%. Fixed characters do count toward your speed; typos you leave in place do not.

Ranks are this site's own bands, not an official standard. Desktop: 20 WPM Novice, 40 Skilled, 60 Fast, 80 Expert, 100 Lightning. Mobile: about 70% of those (14/28/42/56/70), because phone typing is slower. Personal bests are stored per language, level, duration and device, so phone and keyboard scores never mix.

Example: in a 30-second test you type the first line "the cat sat on a warm mat " with one wrong letter, then 10 correct characters of line two, press Enter, and type 2 more correct characters. That's 37 correct characters out of 38: WPM = 37 ÷ 5 ÷ 0.5 = 15, CPM = 74, accuracy 97%.

Pasting and drag-and-drop are blocked, and any single input that adds more than 20 characters is treated as a paste. Results above 250 WPM are flagged as outside human range and are not saved as a best. If your iPhone turns a double space into ". ", you can switch that off in the keyboard settings.

Chinese text is also available: choose 中文 and type with any IME (pinyin, wubi…). Speed is then measured in Chinese characters per minute, counting only committed characters — pinyin letters are never marked wrong.

❓ FAQ

What is a good typing speed in WPM?
On a keyboard, 40 WPM is a solid everyday speed and 60+ WPM is fast; on a phone, about 28 WPM is comparable. This site's bands are 20/40/60/80/100 WPM on desktop and roughly 70% of that on mobile, because thumb typing on glass is slower. Compare yourself against scores from the same device and test length.
How is WPM calculated in a typing test?
WPM is correct characters divided by 5, divided by the minutes of the test. Spaces count as characters, and typos you leave in do not count. For example, 200 correct characters in 1 minute is 40 WPM. Raw WPM uses every character typed instead, so the gap between the two shows how much typos cost you.
How is typing accuracy calculated?
Accuracy is characters typed minus typos, divided by characters typed, rounded down. Typos you correct with Backspace still count, so any mistake keeps you under 100%. It rewards slowing down slightly: an extra typo costs accuracy and the time you spend fixing it.
Why is my typing speed slower on a phone?
Phone typing is usually about 70% of keyboard speed, because you type with one or two thumbs on a flat screen with no physical keys. Autocorrect and predictions can also swap whole words. That is why this test detects the device and keeps mobile and desktop scores and ranks separate.
How can I improve my typing speed?
Get accurate first, then fast — typos don't count toward speed, so rushing backfires. Keep your fingers on the home row, look at the screen instead of the keys, and read a few words ahead of what you are typing. A few 1-minute tests a day show progress clearly in your best and last-10 average.
Is a 1-minute typing test accurate enough?
One minute gives a fair snapshot of your everyday speed, but a single run can swing by a few WPM. Take several 1-minute tests and look at your average, or try the 3-minute test, which smooths out a slow start or one bad line and is closer to sustained typing.
