Sea Battle

Classic sea battle in your browser: hide 5 ships, take turns firing at a 10×10 grid and sink the whole enemy fleet first. Play the computer or pass one phone between two players.

🕹️ How to play

  1. How do you start a game?: Pick “Play the computer” or “2 players, 1 phone”. Your fleet is already placed at random, so you can go straight to battle; or drag ships to move them, tap a ship twice to rotate, or press Shuffle.
  2. How do you fire a shot?: Tap a square in enemy waters to aim — the coordinate, such as C7, appears below — then tap it again or press Fire. A dot is a miss, an orange cross is a hit, and when every square of a ship is hit it is revealed and announced as sunk.
  3. How do two players share one phone?: After P1 confirms a fleet the screen covers itself; P2 taps “I'm P2” and places theirs. Every handoff shows the cover first, and the next player sees which of their squares were just fired at before taking a shot.

📖 Rules & variants

How many ships are there? The classic 10×10 board has a carrier (5), battleship (4), cruiser (3), submarine (3) and destroyer (2): 17 squares. The 8×8 quick game drops the carrier for 12 squares. Ships lie horizontally or vertically, inside the board, without overlapping.

Can ships touch? By default no, not even diagonally; switch on “Ships may touch” before the game to allow it. With touching off, the ring around a sunk ship is marked as known water automatically and costs no shots.

Do you go again after a hit? By default yes: keep firing until you miss. Turn off “Fire again after a hit” for the strict one-shot-per-turn rule. Rules lock once placement starts; the menu shows them read-only.

How do you win? Sink every enemy ship. The game ends on that shot — the other side gets no reply shot — so there are no draws. The result shows shots, hits, accuracy and best run; against the computer your fewest shots per level is recorded.

Search strategy: fire on every other square in a checkerboard pattern, which covers the sea with half the shots. After a hit, probe up, down, left and right; after two hits in a line, follow it both ways. Late in the game, dimmed squares cannot fit the smallest ship left — skip them.

Does the computer cheat? No. It only sees its own shots and sink announcements, never your fleet, and the same position always gets the same shot. After the game, turn on “Replay computer's shots” to see its shots numbered in order on your waters.

❓ FAQ

Can ships touch in Battleship?
In the official rules ships may touch, but many players use a no-touch house rule; this game defaults to no touching, diagonals included, and lets you allow it before you start. With no touching, the water around a sunk ship is marked for you.
Do you get another turn if you hit in Battleship?
Here you do by default: a hit lets you fire again until you miss, which keeps the game moving. Switch it off for the classic one shot per turn, where hit or miss the turn passes. The rule is fixed once the game starts.
How do you play Battleship with 2 players on one phone?
Take turns passing the phone: after each turn a cover screen hides both boards and shows only the next player's number. That player taps to reveal their own view, and backgrounding or reloading the page brings the cover back first.
What is the best Battleship strategy to find ships fast?
Start with a checkerboard pattern, firing on every other square, so no ship of two or more squares can hide. After a hit, test the four neighbours and then follow the line. In the endgame, skip squares too cramped for the smallest ship left.
Does the computer cheat in Battleship games?
This computer cannot: it chooses shots only from public information — its own hits, misses and sink announcements — and never reads your fleet. After the game you can replay every computer shot, numbered in order, to see exactly how it found you.
How long does a game of Battleship take?
A game against the computer takes about 5 to 8 minutes, and a two-player 10×10 game about 10 to 15 minutes. The 8×8 quick board with four ships and 12 squares cuts a two-player game to roughly 5 to 8 minutes.
