Online Piano
Free virtual piano in your browser: play with your computer keyboard or touch screen, follow the glowing keys through 12 easy songs like Twinkle Twinkle and Ode to Joy, then take the rhythm challenge for stars
🕹️ How to play
- Start playing: The page opens on Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star in Practice mode. Tap the glowing key, or press Q on your keyboard (middle C). Each right note turns gold in the note strip and lights up the next key; a wrong key flashes red but never blocks you.
- Computer keyboard layout: Q W E R T Y U I O P [ ] are the white keys from middle C (C4) up to G5, and the number keys 2 3 5 6 7 9 0 = above them are the black keys. Z to / plays the lower white keys and S D G H J L ; the lower black keys. Keys are read by physical position, so AZERTY layouts work too.
- Practice vs. Challenge: Practice waits for the right note, then scores your accuracy. Challenge counts in 4 beats and scrolls the notes to a gold line: hit each one as it arrives for Perfect, Great or Off, and finish with a 0–100 score and up to 3 stars.
- Free play and song list: Free play is an unscored piano with multi-touch and octave − / + buttons. Tap the song name at the top to pick from 12 songs grouped as Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced, each showing your best stars.
📖 Rules & variants
Practice scoring: play every note of the song in order. Accuracy = notes ÷ (notes + wrong notes). 95% or more earns 3 stars, 80% or more 2 stars, and finishing always earns at least 1 star. Random keys before your first correct note don't count.
Challenge timing: within 90 ms of the gold line is Perfect (100 points), within 180 ms is Great (60), within 300 ms is Off (20), and a note that passes the line by more than 300 ms is a Miss. A wrong pitch inside a note's window costs 10 points.
Challenge stars: your score is points ÷ the maximum, shown out of 100. 90+ is 3 stars, 70+ is 2 stars, 40+ is 1 star. Perfect and Great build your combo; Off, Miss and wrong notes reset it.
Songs come in three levels: Beginner uses white keys within one octave, Intermediate crosses octaves and adds eighth notes, and Advanced adds black keys (Für Elise, Greensleeves, Turkish March).
Key labels default to letter names (C D E F G A B). You can switch to numbered notation (1–7) or hide labels in Settings. With a physical keyboard, each key also shows its computer key.
Every song is a single-note melody, so you never need to press chords. Press Esc or the pause button during a challenge; resuming counts in 3 beats, and keys pressed while paused only make sound.
❓ FAQ
⚠️ The piano sound is synthesized live in your browser, not a recording; all songs are public-domain melodies arranged as single-note lines.
