🕹️ How to play

  1. Start a round: The board is ready the moment the page loads. Tap the bottom black tile marked Start — the clock starts on that tap — then keep tapping the black tile in the lowest row, one row at a time.
  2. Pick a mode: Use the three buttons above the board: Classic times you over 50 tiles, Timed counts how many tiles you clear in 30 seconds, and Endless scrolls the board by itself and speeds up, with Slow, Normal and Fast starting speeds.
  3. Play with a keyboard: On a computer, D, F, J and K map to the four columns from left to right — two fingers per hand works best. Holding a key does not repeat, and Esc pauses the round with a 3-2-1 countdown when you resume.
  4. See why you lost: A white tile you hit turns red, and a black tile you missed is pulled back into view and flashes red, with the reason written above the board. The result card shows your score, your best and a rank; Play again deals a fresh route.

📖 Rules & variants

Basic rules: the board has four columns and exactly one black tile per row. Start from the bottom row and tap each black tile in order. Tapping a white tile, or letting a black tile slide off the bottom in Endless, ends the round at once. There are no revives, power-ups or extra lives, so every record is earned the same way.

Classic mode timing: the clock starts when you tap tile 1 and stops when you tap tile 50, measured to the millisecond. Tiles never move on their own in Classic, so kids and beginners can finish a full round at their own pace. If you hit a white tile you see how far you got, such as 37/50, and no time is recorded.

Timed mode rules: a 30-second countdown starts on tile 1, and your score is every tile you clear before it reaches zero, tile 1 included. Taps after the buzzer never count, and the readout turns red for the last five seconds. Hitting a white tile ends the round early but keeps the tiles you already cleared.

Endless mode speed: the board scrolls by itself and keeps speeding up, but the increase flattens out over time. Normal starts at about 4 tiles per second, reaches about 5.1 after 10 seconds and 6.9 after 30 seconds, and never exceeds 9. Speed depends only on game time, not on your screen's refresh rate, and each starting speed keeps its own best.

How taps are judged: a tap anywhere in the right column, on the black tile or below it, counts as a hit. In Classic and Timed the whole column counts. Tapping a grey tile you already cleared, or a black tile further up, is ignored instead of ending the round, so a shaky finger or two thumbs landing together won't cost you. Switching apps, locking the screen or rotating the phone pauses the game and hides the tiles.

Ranks and tunes: Classic ranks go by average speed — 5 tiles per second or more is Lightning, 3.5 is Quick, 2 is Steady, anything slower is Easy does it. Timed mode uses 150, 105 and 60 tiles. Every tap plays the next note of a public-domain melody, the tune changes each round, and the result card tells you which one you played.

❓ FAQ

How do you play Don't Tap the White Tile?
You tap only the black tiles, starting from the bottom row and moving up, and the round ends if you touch a white tile or miss a black one. This page has Classic (50 tiles against the clock), Timed (30 seconds) and Endless modes, and you start by tapping the bottom tile marked Start.
What is a good time in piano tiles Classic mode?
Under 14 seconds for 50 tiles is a quick time, and 9.8 seconds or less earns Lightning. This page ranks by average speed over the 49 gaps between taps: 5 tiles per second or more is Lightning, 3.5 is Quick and 2 is Steady. Most beginners land around 20 seconds at first.
Why did I lose when I tapped the black tile?
Usually the tap landed on the white tile next to it in the same row, or in Endless the tile had already slid off the board. Here a tap anywhere in the right column counts, even below the tile, and the losing cell is marked red with the reason, so you can see exactly what happened.
Can you slow down the black tiles game?
Yes — Classic mode never moves on its own, so it goes exactly at your pace. For Endless, pick the Slow starting speed, which begins at about 2.5 tiles per second and ramps up more gently; each starting speed keeps a separate best score.
How do you play piano tiles on a keyboard?
Use D, F, J and K for the four columns from left to right, two fingers on each hand. Holding a key down does not repeat the tap, and Esc pauses the game. You can also just click the tiles with a mouse.
Is there an endless mode in Don't Tap the White Tile?
Yes. In Endless the tiles scroll down by themselves and keep getting faster until you tap a white tile or miss one. You choose Slow, Normal or Fast as the starting speed, and the result card shows your tile count and the top speed you reached.
