🕹️ How to play

  1. Set players and spies: Pick the player count (3–20), spy count and difficulty; add a blank for extra challenge with 5+ players. Validation guarantees civilians always outnumber spies.
  2. Pass the phone to deal words: Pass the phone around; each player privately views only their own word. Most get the same civilian word, a few spies get a close-but-different word, the blank gets none. Hide, then pass on.
  3. Describe and hunt the spy: A random first speaker is chosen, then everyone describes their word in one sentence by seat order without saying it outright. Find whose word doesn't match.
  4. Vote to eliminate: Everyone votes out the most suspicious player; after a confirm, only the identity is revealed (not the word). Repeat until spies are all out (civilians win) or spies tie the civilians (spies win).

📖 Rules & variants

Roles: most players are civilians sharing one word; a few spies share a close but different word. Default 1 spy, more for bigger groups. An optional blank has no word and counts on the spy side; it needs 5+ players.

Dealing: a pair is drawn at random and the two words' sides are randomly swapped, so hearing a word can't reveal your role. Recently used pairs won't repeat soon.

Rounds: a random first speaker each round, then one-sentence descriptions by seat order. Vote, confirm, and reveal only the identity — never the eliminated word.

Winning: civilians win when no spy/blank remains; the spy side wins when spies+blanks tie or exceed civilians. The full word pair is only revealed on the result screen.

Difficulty & variants: easy/normal/hard with increasing similarity, plus a locked spicy bank for adults. Ties are settled by players; in-progress games aren't persisted and reset on refresh.

❓ FAQ

How do you play Undercover / Who Is the Spy?
Deal words on one phone: most players share a civilian word, a few spies get a close but different one. A random first speaker starts, everyone describes in one sentence by seat order without saying it, then votes out the most suspicious. Civilians win by catching all spies; spies win by tying the civilians.
What's the minimum number of players for Undercover?
3 players minimum here (2 civilians, 1 spy); 4–12 is best. Add a second spy at 8+ and a blank at 5+. The app always keeps civilians in the majority.
How many spies should there be in Undercover?
Usually 1 spy; add a second at 8+ players for more mind games. The cap follows 'civilians must strictly outnumber spies plus blanks', and the stepper auto-clamps over-limit values.
What is the blank role in Undercover?
The blank gets no word and must bluff by listening. It counts on the spy side and must be found by civilians. It raises difficulty, so it needs 5+ players and is off by default.
What word pairs are in Undercover?
Original close pairs graded easy/normal/hard: obvious (Coke/Sprite), moderate (Latte/Cappuccino), very close (Americano/Espresso). Plus a locked spicy nightlife bank. Pairs are drawn randomly, don't repeat soon, and swap sides to avoid leaks.
Any tips for describing your word in Undercover?
Describe in a way that fits both close words — vague enough to hide, specific enough to be believable. Spies should listen first and follow; civilians can plant details only the real word-holder would get. Too specific gives you away; too vague looks guilty.

⚠️ An in-person, same-screen party game. The word bank is for entertainment; the spicy bank has drink/nightlife themes, locked by default until you confirm you're an adult.
