🕹️ How to play

  1. How to start a song association game: The page opens ready to go — Red vs Blue, 5 rounds, 15 seconds a word. Tap “Draw a word”. The countdown starts the moment the card flips; there is no separate start button to forget.
  2. How to sing the word: The team on turn sings one lyric line that contains the word on the card before the ring runs out. One line is enough and singing off-key costs nothing. Whoever holds the phone is the judge: tap “Sang it” for 2 points or “Stumped” if nobody on that team could find one.
  3. How steals work: After “Stumped”, every other team gets 5 seconds. Whoever sings a line first, tap their name for +1. If nobody manages it, tap “Nobody got it” and the word goes on the “stumped the room” list.
  4. How to swap a hard word: Each team gets 2 free swaps per game. A swap puts the word back under the pile, deals a new one from the same tier and restarts the timer. Save them for the hard round at the end.

📖 Rules & variants

The one-line rule: a word is drawn, and the team on turn has to sing a lyric line containing it before time runs out. It tests how fast you can search the songs in your head, not how well you sing — one line is enough, and wrong notes or a forgotten second half never cost points.

Scoring has three outcomes. Sing it on your own turn: +2. Miss, and another team steals it inside 5 seconds: +1 to the stealer. Nobody gets it: 0, and the word lands on the “stumped the room” list. A word can be sung by two teams at most, so a turn never turns into an endless back-and-forth.

Turns and difficulty: 2 to 8 teams take turns, one word per team per round, with 3, 5 or 8 rounds. The default “ramp up” difficulty always opens on warm-up words (love, baby, heart, night — in almost every pop song), moves to main words (summer, city, rainbow) and only deals hard words (monkey, satellite, volcano) in the final round, with 5 extra seconds. Every team in the same round gets a word from the same tier, so it stays fair.

House rules are settled before you start: do sound-alike words count, does a word that only appears in the song title count, do songs in any language count, and does saying the line instead of singing it count. The four rules sit as small chips on the stage, so an argument is settled with a glance. Changing one mid-game restarts the game.

Running out of time never auto-fails anyone. At zero the ring shows “Time!”, “Stumped” becomes the main button and “Sang it” turns into “Beat the buzzer ✓”, for the singer who started right on the whistle. The judgement always belongs to the room — the page never listens, records or scores a voice.

Tips: start from the images love songs use all the time (heart, night, rain, dream); if the word is in a song title you know, jump to that song's chorus; and keep a line ready during other teams' turns, because a steal can come to you at any moment.

Popular variations: the losing team does a forfeit (spin the punishment wheel for one); only songs in one language allowed; a steal must use a different song from the one attempted; or the hardcore version, where each song may only be used once per game. The page does not enforce any of these — the room agrees on them.

❓ FAQ

How do you play the song association game?
A word is drawn and the team on turn must sing a song lyric containing it before the timer ends. Tap “Draw a word”, and 15 seconds start the moment the card flips. Sing any line with the word for 2 points; if you are stumped, the other teams get a 5-second steal worth 1 point. After the last round the highest total wins, and tied teams share the win.
What are good words for a sing-the-word game?
Good words are ones a room can recall several songs for within seconds, graded from easy to hard. Warm-up words like love, baby, heart and night are in almost every pop song; main words like summer, city, rainbow and radio need a moment; hard words like monkey, satellite and hurricane each still have a few songs people know. The default ramp always opens easy and saves the hard words for the last round.
What counts in the song association game — does the word have to be exact?
By default the exact word has to appear in the line you sing, but the room can change that before starting. There are four house rules: sound-alike words, the word only in the song title (counts by default), songs in any language (counts by default), and saying instead of singing (does not count by default). They stay on screen as chips so any argument is settled quickly.
What if nobody can think of a song with the word?
Use a swap first: every team has 2 free swaps per game that deal a new word from the same tier and restart the timer. If you are still stuck, tap “Stumped” and the other teams get a 5-second steal. Nobody gets it? The word goes on the “stumped the room” list at the end — usually the funniest part of the game.
How many people can play a karaoke word game?
Two to eight teams can play, and a team can be one person or a whole side of the table. It works best with 3 to 10 people split into two to four teams. At roughly 20–30 seconds a word, two teams over 5 rounds take about 4–5 minutes, so it fits neatly between songs at karaoke.
Is sing-the-word the same as a song title chain game?
No — here you sing a lyric that contains a drawn word, while a title chain makes you name a song starting with the last letter of the previous title. In this game every word stands on its own and nothing chains, so a stumped turn never breaks the whole round.

⚠️ This page only draws words, times turns and keeps score. It stores no lyrics, song titles or artist names, never asks for your microphone, records nothing and plays no audio — the room decides whether a line counts. No sign-up, no download, nothing sent over the network; names and records stay in this browser only.
