🕹️ How to play

  1. How to start and launch the ball in Breakout: Click Start and the ball sticks to the paddle. Slide the paddle left and right to pick an angle, then tap the screen or press Space to launch it upward. The launch direction has a slight random tilt, so no two rounds trace the exact same path.
  2. How to control the paddle on desktop and mobile: On desktop, move the paddle with the ← → arrow keys or A/D, or just move the mouse; on mobile, drag your finger inside the play area and the paddle follows. Where the ball hits the paddle sets the bounce angle — hits near the edge rebound more sharply.
  3. How to break bricks, score and clear a level: Send the ball into the bricks above to break them and score; the top rows are worth more. Clear the whole wall to advance to a faster next level. Ball speed rises with every level, so the deeper you go, the tenser it gets.
  4. How many lives you lose when the ball drops: If the ball slips below the paddle and leaves the field it costs 1 life and re-serves. Classic gives you 3 lives — when they run out the round ends and shows your score and the level you reached. Chill has 5 lives, Fast only 1.

📖 Rules & variants

Basic rules: a wall of colored bricks sits at the top of a tall field, with a paddle you slide left and right along the bottom. After the launch the ball bounces off the side and top walls; hitting the paddle changes its angle by where it lands — the closer to the paddle's edge, the sharper the bounce.

Scoring: every brick you break scores by its row, and higher rows are worth more, with your score adding up through the round. On a clear or game over it compares your local best score and highest level. This mode has no time bonus and no combo multiplier.

How many levels: the game ships 6 different brick layouts. Clear the current wall to move on to the next level and speed the ball up. After the 6th layout it keeps looping that layout and speeding up each level, until the ball hits its top speed and rises no further.

What the three difficulties change: Chill, Classic and Fast change the starting ball speed, paddle width and number of lives. Chill has a wider paddle and 5 lives, Classic has 3 lives, and Fast has a narrower paddle and just 1 life.

Common beginner mistakes: chasing a fast-dropping ball with frantic paddle moves, watching only the ball instead of the gaps in the wall, and always catching with the middle of the paddle all make the ball hard to control. It is steadier to get in position early, use the paddle's edge for sharp angles, and first open a path up to the top of the wall.

How many players: solo is great for practicing ball control and chasing your record, while pass-and-play suits 2–8 people taking turns on one device. Multiplayer ranks by level reached first, then by score; pick the same difficulty so the results compare fairly.

FAQ

How do you play Breakout?
The core of Breakout is moving the paddle at the bottom to catch the ball and bounce it up to clear every brick above. Each brick you break scores points; clear the wall to reach a faster next level, and if the ball drops below the paddle you lose 1 life.
What are the keyboard controls for Breakout?
On desktop you can move the paddle with the arrow keys or A/D, launch with Space, and pause or resume with Esc. You can also steer the paddle with the mouse; a ball hitting the paddle's middle bounces straighter, while an edge hit rebounds at a sharper angle.
What are the best tips to score high in Breakout?
To score high in Breakout, actively control the bounce angle: punch a tunnel through the wall, then let the ball bounce along the top and clear bricks in a row. Top-row bricks are worth more, so clear them first; for tricky balls, get in position early instead of lunging the paddle at the last second.
How many levels does Breakout have, and can you beat it?
This web Breakout has 6 different brick layouts; after them it loops the 6th layout and keeps raising the level. There is no fixed ending — the ball speeds up each level and stops at a cap — so the goal is to beat your score and highest-level record.
How many players can play Breakout?
Breakout's solo mode is for playing on your own, while pass-and-play mode suits 2–8 people taking turns on one device. After each person finishes a round it ranks by level reached first, then by score; using the same difficulty keeps the comparison fair.
What are the variants of classic Breakout?
Common classic Breakout variants include solo level-runs, limited-lives high-score challenges and multiplayer turns, differing in goal and scoring. This page's solo mode offers three difficulties and looping levels, while multiplayer lets 2–8 people each play a round and ranks them by level and score.
